It’s always a good idea to write things down. For our assignment this week in Advanced Studio Lighting we were restricted to ONE light. The subject had to be editorial in nature and was required to be photographed in the studio on campus. I will admit, I felt like my hands were tied going into the studio with only one light to plug in. It turned out to be a crucial exercise in understanding the studio and how to operate in there. The iPhone photos below show my idea from beginning to end. My though to photograph Andy in his firefighting equipment was the first thing I wrote down 15 seconds after I had the assignment sheet. By the time I walked out of class I knew what I was going to photograph. It’s really all downhill from there.

Somehow all this scribbling below turned into a portrait. I wrote it all before I ever made a phone call to set things up.

After completing his probational first year as a City of Bowling Green firefighter, Andy Shultz, 25, admits that he still loves jumping on the truck and going for runs. “I don’t want to wish bad on anyone, but I love doing my job,” said Shultz. Not going home at the end of the day has been the hardest part of becoming a firefighter for Shultz. “It throws a wrench into your normal life,” Shultz said. “Living with ten guys is… different,” he said while laughing.

I hope you enjoy these last 4 assignments I shot over the past few weeks. I apologize for not posting each week as I completed the assignments. I just started a new job (bringing the total to 3) for Werkshop Marketing in Bowling Green. Check their website out here.

The Catholic church has remained silent during repeated media attention over the last several weeks. A series of problems that started with a sexual abuse scandle has been linked to Pope Benedict XVI. The Pope’s silence on the sexual-abuse scandal in Berlin has disappointed many Catholics in his native Germany. Photo by Daniel Houghton

He lives on a golf course and often practices on the hole outside his house once the sun goes down. Photo by Daniel Houghton

Sarah Berry, 31, and her 8 month old daughter, Juliette grow more alike every day. “Most people say she looks like my husband Mark, but now she’s starting to look more like me,” Berry said. “I love coffee, and the other day Juliette starting trying to drink out of my coffee cup! It really made me laugh.” Berry is a cello teacher at WKU and is currently 5 months pregnant with her second child. Photo by Daniel Houghton

This was for an assignment on fresh food. It’s probably the quickest I’ve turned a studio assignment, shooting both images before 10am.

This weeks assignment for studio lighting class was to photograph motion. So long as we used a human as our main subject and shot it in the studio, the rest was up to us.

Once again, as soon as I got the assignment sheet I started writing things down. I wrote down the the following immediately after getting the assignment: track runner, cars, gymnasts, breakdancer, someone who can do backflips in the studio.

I though to myself for a few minutes as we were showed images of dancers on the projector as an example of motion. My first thought was something I immediately confirmed: I’m not going to shoot a dancer.

Soon after that, I remembered a portrait that I shot a year ago of football player Jake Gaebler. At the time he was preparing for his senior season, only 15 yards short of breaking the all time receiving record here at WKU. Despite the Hilltoppers disappointing season, Jake broke the record and I decided to photograph him for this assignment.

I’ll try and make the rest of the long story short. I wanted jake flying through the air with light trails brilliantly lit behind him. I wanted something high key and beautiful.
I knew I would need a landing pad for jake so I called the football office and asked to borrow a pole-vaulting landing pad to bring into the studio. I’ll spare you the details but they brought the equillivant of a yoga mat. My problems didn’t end there as I realized that I would need an on camera flash to use rear sync triggering in the studio. Jake was an awesome and paitent subject and I’m happy with what I came away with.

A special thanks goes out to Chris Wilson and Miranda Barzey for their AMAZING help in the studio. Chris tossed the football, Miranda independently fired the lights, I pushed the button and Jake took care of the rest. Never be afraid to ask for help in the studio. 4 minds are better than 1.

After three days in Rome, it’s good to be home to some wireless internet, working electrical outlets, and Coke that doesn’t cost $4.50.

Our first day we arrived at 7:53am and had a whole day ahead of us (despite being up for 16 hours already). We headed first to our hotel located on Via Nazionale and then went straight to Vatican City. With the help of one of the coolest iPhone/iPod Touch apps I’ve ever seen we took our audio guide app and headed into the Vatican Museum, ultimately arriving at the Sistine Chapel.

Thursday we visited the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Later that night we went back to the Colosseum where I made a time exposure of the traffic there (see last photo in this post). I didn’t take a tripod but set my camera in the middle of the street on top of a road cone and fired away 30 seconds at a time.

Friday was our last day and we rounded out our trip by seeing the Pantheon and a few other sights around town. We found some wifi that day and I posted a few iPhone images right from the iPhone Wordpress application that you can see here.

I hope you enjoy the pictures I made over the past few days.

2009 was a busy year for me. I began by photographing my first inauguration as President Barack Obama took office in January. It was the first time in my life that I have seen a president in person. As the second half of my junior year got underway I photographed a fire on 13th Street in Bowling Green which lead me to a firefighter with an incredible story to tell.

In February, I photographed the largest group of Kentucky troops returning from Iraq since the war began. It was an emotional experience that words can’t describe.

My internship at the Seattle Times presented me with my first courtroom experience and learned that it’s not fun to be the only photographer in the room at a murder trial.

Next week I’m traveling to Washington DC to attend the annual white house press christmas party with one of my best friends Luke Sharrett. Apparently we get our picture taken with President Obama. I’ll be sure to post that if it happens. I hope you enjoy my year in news pictures.

You may have noticed things have been quiet for a few weeks here on the site. I’ve had some visitors and taken a few trips to the mountains. Luke Sharrett came and visited me the last week in July and my sister Kate came all the way from France to visit before heading back to college. Thanks to Luke and Kate for keeping me company and getting me out to Rainier for a few day’s.

I took Luke to Rainier a few weeks ago and we hiked up a glacier. It was an amazing way to spend the afternoon and once we got to the top, we sat on the rocks for several hours just looking at the scenery. Kate was here last week and I took her to Rainier for a very different experience. Total cloud cover and visibility around 30 feet made for a different perspective of things in the mountains. It was constantly misting as we walked through the clouds.

Above: The glacier that Luke and I hiked up at Mount Rainier.

Above: The Paradise Inn, photographed during my trip with Luke turned out to be where Kate and I stayed the next week.

Above: The historic inn, which was built in the 20’s has no cell signal, internet connection or television. It was really nice to be away from everything for a few days. The inn has been kept just like it was the day it opened, small rustic rooms, beautiful architecture and bathrooms down the hall.

Kate and I latched on to this family to find the way home after getting a little unsure of the fog.

Above: A boat makes it’s way through the moonlight on the sound.

One of the less pleasant surprises of the summer was getting my car window smashed late one night while I was parked downtown. Only my GPS and iPhone changer were taken from my glove box. As you can see, they left everything else (including my photo gear which was covered in the trunk) once the alarm made them wet their pants. I must say I was disappointed with the Seattle police dept. as it took them two hours to come make a report, Starbucks must have been on sale that night or something (trust me nothing was happening, I have a police scanner).

This is a terrible compression but I’m working on it. The Blue Angels visited Seattle a few weeks ago and I was shooting stills for the paper. I shot the stills below with a 400/2.8 handheld (a monopod is pretty much useless when your subject is in the sky). I did a little video for kicks and though I would throw a little something together to test the way my new site handles video. Keep in mind, it’s a little unstable, I was handholding a 400. Hope you enjoy.

In addition to my recently added Pages post, there are a lot of pictures that I shoot each week that never see the light of day. Instead of making a bunch of individual posts, Outtakes will be the place for my extra work that didn’t make the print addition or the web. In order to hold myself accountable for my pictures, I’ve decided to write something about why I think each picture belongs here. Does it convey a feeling or mood? Does it take you somewhere and make you feel like your there? Or is it just visually interesting that would make you want to buy a paper if it was on A1. I want to know what you think as well. You can comment right here on the page, reply to @danielhoughton on twitter, or write it on my facebook wall. I hope you enjoy, I’ll update as they come in.

It’s been a while since I updated my outtakes. I’ve made some images I’m really proud of. One of my accomplishments of the past few weeks has been faster and more accurate caption writing. My editor makes me write captions as if someone coming out of a coma from 1492 can understand. I used to hate it, now it love it. It’s easier on the editors and only gets you more play on the wires.

Last night I went to the Gorge, an amazing amphitheater in the eastern part of the state about three hours outside of Seattle. It was quite the temperature change at almost 105 degrees. Although I drank plenty of water I threw up while shooting the first band perform. Yep, threw up right there in the photo pit. The bad part was that I only had 45 seconds to shoot the band. 10 of those seconds were robbed right before I knew I was going to throw up, and then another 5 actually throwing up over the rail. It’s fair to say I had around 30 seconds to shoot the below pictures of the band. At least I achieved one goal for the night. I was fast and accurate.

I’m starting with this one for two reasons. First, there is some weird grabbing that appears to go on in the MLS. Left, a sounders player is felt up after heading the ball. On the right, I’m not sure what is possibly worse than losing the game by allowing the soccer ball to fly right past you while you get kicked in the nuts. Perhaps he was distracted. Ouch!

Some real acrobatics going on in these. For once in the game, the Houston goalkeeper caught the ball.

I didn’t get the best view of the bicycle kick that won the game but at least you can see the leg coming into the frame. Ichiro currently has the highest batting average in the MLB. He was worth going to the mariners game just to watch. Check out how the paper ran the game images here on the pages post. During one of his times up to bat he tipped 9 balls into foul territory just waiting until he got the pitch he wanted. Then he proceeded to get a triple off a grounder. This little guy is fast.

Below, two very good reasons I would not want to be alone in the Washington forrest at night. On the left, an injured bald eagle named Freedom has been living at the Survey wildlife care center for 18 years. She has two broken wings. This is a full size female bald eagle (girls are bigger than boy’s) and it was incredible to see one up close. I know it’s hard to believe but this bird has a wingspan of 7.9 feet! Thats more than a foot taller than me. I can’t explain the size of this thing, just imagine the owl to the right standing next to it, it would not even come up half way on the bald eagle.

This little guy had just finished getting a bath and dried off. I just know he is going to grow up to dig through my trash just like his parents.

Yesterday’s assignment took me deep into the forrest near Port Angeles (twlight fans anyone? it’s where Edward saves Bella. And don’t ask me how I know.) No vampires popped out out the fog but I wouldn’t have seen them if they did. The fog was so thick I could barely photograph my story on earthquake scientists there. Unfortunatly I can’t publish those yet until it runs in the paper next week but These are a good idea of what I was like.

This is more like it. Pouring rain, thick fog, a rain jacket and a camera. It really sucks shooting pictures in those conditions but the show must go on.

Looks like a silhouette right? This was perfect exposure in those woods. It was dark in there. I like the sense of place in this picture and the feel of it.

The mother of murder victim Terrell Milam, hugs a friend after defendant Omar Norman was found guilty of murdering her son. Read about the story here.
This was a tough picture to shoot. Mrs. Norman later thanked me for being there and helping to tell the truth about what happened to her son.

I really like this picture a lot. Zyreal was dragging his cat across the floor when he looked up at me and said, enough pictures, lets just play. I like the composition and the moment. To me it speaks a lot about his personality without having to meet him.

I like the moment in this picture and the way his parents are carefully watching him as he plays in his room. See how the paper ran the story here and read more about Zyreal on the paper’s website here.

I feel like I’m there in this picture. Right up with the kids at the rally to raise money for their teachers. I think it’s an “almost” photo but I still really like it.

I like the kids faces in this picture. I don’t think the composition is right on but it’s another picture that takes you to the moment.

I shot a 3 alarm fire the other day in Renton. This is a picture I’m drawn to mostly because of the simplicity of it. I like the way the water leads out of the frame and the way the fireman’s pointing back down the ladder.

From the same fire as above, this is one of the family members who owns the building. I got away from the police tape to find him on the phone explaining to his family members that the building they had owned for 50 years was burning to the ground. What I like about the picture is just the look on his face and how you can almost feel what he’s thinking.

I like the tension in this picture and the fight to get to the ball. If I remember correctly a penalty was called after this happened. The two teams had confrontation the whole game.

I love this picture. This is the youngest ticket holder for the Seattle Sounders FC soccer team. To me it’s more than just a cute kid, you can see the anticipation on his face as he waits for the game to start.
